Educational Games for Kids

Let us take a look at some great educational board games that you and your kid (not to mention your entire family) can enjoy together…

Scrabble

Undeniably, Scrabble remains the most popular word board game for kids and adults today. In this game, you create words using letter tiles and rack up points on the Scrabble board based on the length and the complexity of the words that are formed. Bonus points are also gained by creating words on bonus spaces. Scrabble comes in several editions based upon the age of the players. However, if you want to develop your child’s vocabulary, you can let him or her use a Junior Dictionary so that they can learn more words.

Boggle

Next to Scrabble, Boggle is another fun word game to play with your kids. Here, you shake the Boggle container and let the letter cubes settle on the tray. From the string of adjacent letters, list down the words that have been formed. Because the game comes with a timer, you need to come up with the most words within the time limit to win.

Blokus

Blokus is an abstract strategy game that has won the Mensa Select Award and 2004 Teacher’s Choice Award. It is rather difficult for your younger kids to master at first. Each player is given sets of game tiles in various shapes. The object of the game is to put all of your tiles on the board, but you should make sure that the tiles touch only at the corners and never at their sides. Blokus enables kids to develop their planning and spatial skills. It also promotes concentration as your kids try to determine the moves that will block their opponents in order for them to win. There are several variations of Blokus, including Blokus Trigon and Blokus 3D.

Qwirkle

Qwirkle won the Mensa Best Mind Game Award. An exciting logic game, it involves matching shape and color patterns. Players score points by building lines that share common colors or shapes. This game of strategy enables kids to learn tactics which would enable them to build the most lines. A very challenging even for adults, Qwirkle is a great game to play with the entire family.
