Parenting Toddlers: Using Positive Words

Being a parent to toddlers is very tough, especially for a stay at home mom. Words like “no!” and “don’t run!” are said many times the whole day. Often times, you find yourself being exhausted at the end of the day. Hence, to prevent these confrontations, there are ways we can do. Using positive words when talking to our child is one of the most effective ways in order to avoid such situation.

As a parent, remember to have the right expectations by setting things appropriate for your child’s age and capability. This will reduce the stress of parenting. When the situation becomes uncontrollable, think and stop for a moment before you talk again. In this way, you can stop saying more negative words and regain control of the situation. When there is no way, just replace negative words to positive ones. Words like “Don’t run” should be replaced with “Please walk slowly.” “Don’t yell” can be replaced by “Please lower your voice.” When your child did what you have told him to do, reward him with praise and encouragement.
