Parenting Tips for Working Parents
Parents who bring their baby home from the hospital often find themselves needing to make major changes in their lives. This is especially true for working parents. In most cases, the wife goes on a lengthy leave of absence or quits her job entirely in order to care for the child while the husband continues working.
Sadly, the working parent starts to feel detached from his family. As he/she misses major milestones in their child’s life, they even start to develop feelings of resentment toward their spouse who is with their child most of the time. In contrast, the “stay home” parent also begins feeling resentful for missing out on life with friends and acquaintances. They believe they are trapped in a bubble of domestic routine from which there is no escape.
There are ways, however, by which parents can still maintain a loving, healthy relationship with each other…
Always Maintain Open Communication
It is very important you express your feelings to each other often. Make it a point to share your experiences during the day. Don’t gloss too much over certain incidents which may make your spouse envious. Instead, let it just be a simple sharing of stories and feelings. If you feel sad or discontent about something, share it with your spouse as well. In doing so, you will be able to bridge the gap that has been created as a result of your assuming different parental roles in the family.
Be Generous with Your Compliments
Most parents would want their spouses to recognize and reassure them that they have assumed the right role. Once your husband gets home from a long, hard day at the office, reward him with a nice warm bath and a foot massage. On the other hand, husbands should give their wives a hug and a kiss, and take on other chores so that they could relax after taking care of their baby/child for the entire day.
Spend Quality Time with Baby
Both parents should have equal quality time with baby. It is very important for the baby to have bonding moments with both their Moms and Dads. As child psychologists have observed, babies develop social skills with their interactions with their parents, especially since they have different approaches. For example, while Mom may be more gentle and careful in handling and playing with baby, Dads enjoy a little roughhousing.
Other ways by which you can spend quality time with your baby is by bringing him/her along while doing certain tasks. For example, if you are cleaning the house, let your baby watch you work as he/she sits on a high chair. You can also bring baby to the grocery as you shop. One fun activity for baby is bath time. After a hard day’s work, share a bath with baby especially if you have a nice tub.
